A Short History of Vienna´s 16th District – Ottakring

It is said that Ottakring is on the site of one of Vienna´s oldest settlements. It is first mentioned in 1150 in a document in which a vineyard in "Otachringen" is presented to the Convent of St. Peter in Salzburg under the reign of Archbishop Eberhard.

Originally, Ottakring´s inhabitants were independant farmers. Later they were subordinated to Klosterneuburg Monastery´s rule (Lower Austria), until they were again liberated in 1848.

In 1890, the federal government of Lower Austria unified the two villages Neulerchenfeld and Ottakring - against the spirited will of its inhabitants - with the City of Vienna. Since then, Ottakring is Vienna´s 16th district.
